Letter to Editor, AFR, ACNC register at risk

The government wants to replace the charity regulator, the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), with a charity evaluator model based on the US-based Charity Navigator ("US-style regulation of charities under question", AFR, January 30).

Since its inception at the end of 2012, the ACNC has been building the register, which is at the heart of charity regulation. It provides a free, online, credible, searchable database on charities.

A Centre of Excellence cannot compel charities to provide information in the same way a regulator can, which means the data integrity of the register will decline. Is that what is best for the sector?
