Inaugural Governance Institute forum supports strong NFP governance

To support the growing importance of good governance in the not-for-profit (NFP) sector, Governance Institute of Australia is holding its inaugural NFP Forum on the theme of ‘Integrated governance and risk management’ on Wednesday 26 November, 2014 at the Rydges Hotel, Perth.

Professor David Gilchrist, director of the Curtin University NFP initiative, a research body tasked with developing industry-ready outcomes and practical governance knowledge, will deliver the forum’s keynote address.

“Practical skills and knowledge in governance are critical for anyone seeking to improve the performance, transparency and accountability of their organisation,” said Tim Sheehy, chief executive of Governance Institute of Australia. “NFP bodies in particular are increasingly aware of how a robust governance and risk management framework directly builds public trust and contributes to the credibility and success of the organisation.”

Governance Institute’s NFP Forum is designed to provide delegates with practical information on how to integrate governance and risk management within their organisation at both an operational and strategic level.

The forum will cover topical issues for the sector such as: consolidation of NFPs; developing and implementing an investment strategy for reserve funds; creating a risk management culture; and understanding what corporates expect when sponsoring an NFP. There will also be a governance workshop tailored for the needs of NFP directors and officers.

“Good governance translates to real outcomes for NFPs. It promotes stronger donor confidence which in turn improves fund raising. And it fosters good risk management which in turn leads to more successful program execution. We are confident that delegates attending the forum will leave with practical governance skills they can immediately apply in their day to day roles,” Mr Sheehy said.

Other speakers at the forum include; Sheila McHale (CEO, Palmerston Association Inc), Debbie Karasinski (CEO, Senses), Fiona Kalaf (CEO, Lifeline WA), Bev East (General Manager Communities, Woodside Energy Ltd) and Dalveen Belyea (Consultant, Gilbert + Tobin’s Third Sector Advisory Group).
